automotive device for looking deeper into whats wrong with car?

its called a scope, a regular diagnosis isn’t enough to seek out the problem. What is the name called and where can I find a shop in MI other than the dealerships who use it.

It is called an occiliscope..very few shops have them now and those that do have a limited # of people that know ho to use them…The makers I am familiar with are the “SUN” Smart Scope..and The “Bear” Smart engine analizer…If you can find a shop that has one and a tech that knows how to use it..you have found a treasure

It is called a “bore scope.” It is a camera on a flexible shaft that can fit down into the cylinders via the spark plug holes. It is an expensive tool and not really necessary to own unless you are an aircraft mechanic.

Any troubles that are visible with a bore scope can be diagnosed just as well by using compression tests.

Any vehicle which is made from 1996 on up can be scanned with a factory scanner to not only read trouble codes but also the engine, transmission, ABS, and traction control data. This enables the technician to determine which sensors or solenoids are out of spec. A cheap OBD II scanner can’t read most of the data the more expensive factory scanners monitor so I would have the vehicle diagnosed at the dealer.
