Stories from the Road, Automotive Injector Noid for Void

Automotive Robo Tech was called to a shop for a hard start complaint on a 19 95, Volvo 7 40 2.3 liter engine. The car was always hard to start after an extended shutdown. Once started the vehicle would run all day without any problems. The shop, did perform a full tune-up, but the problem prevailed. When I arrived at the shop, the head technician explained that he put a Noid light on one of the injectors, and it seemed like a weak pulse. If he sprayed carburetor cleaner in the throttle body, the car would start right, up with no problems. He also said that he had checked the fuel pressure, and it was at correct specifications, at about 35 PSI With the information the tech gave me, it seemed like we had some type of lean condition. Due to the lack of Data Stream capabilities, I decided to go to the ECM in the right lower kick panel to perform some ECM PIN, or terminal checks. I selected the injector pin first, which on this vehicle feeds all four injectors in parallel. I wanted to see the pulse width command while cranking. So I hooked up the scope, and used a current probe around the injector driver circuit. This would not only tell me the injector on time, but it would also test the integrity of the injector circuit. I set my Amp probe to output 100 milli Volts per 1 Amp, and set my scope screen to 50 milli Volts per division. Each division on the scope screen would now represent 0.5 Amps.
