no, antifreeze also has anti-corrosion properties in it as well. Just keep the same mix through the year, it doesn’t need changing very often at all

There’s no white smoke coming out the exhaust. The coolant temp gauge just goes up past the middle after a few miles of stop and go driving.

Umm no. You need to get the head gasket fixed. You are destroying your engine, but now it may be too late.
